I have often mentioned working on Jenny, my Janome 1600P. Jenny is a high speed, straight stitch only machine that is great for fast piecing and quilting. Amazing for quilting. Let me tell you, though, that she is extremely heavy and not travel friendly. Several years ago I bought my other favorite sewing machine, my Brother CS6000i. I love this machine! It is great for retreats because it is incredibly lightweight. It has so many decorative stitches and makes beautiful buttonholes in many different styles. It comes with feet for just about everything you can think to do, has a quilting table and you can pull off the arm for freearm sewing. Because it is lightweight, you have to be realistic about what it will do well and what it won’t. Though it comes with a quilting table, quilting stitches and a quilting foot, it really only can do small quilting projects effectively. I have quilted a baby quilt on it but had to anchor with a no slip surface and it was still a struggle. It does not like heavy or bulky seams. You are not going to be making slipcovers on this baby! It IS great for piecing, general sewing, applique work and decorative stitching.
When I tell you that this is my second favorite machine, I am telling you that from the vantage point of a woman who owns and has used two different Singer machines, a Kenmore, another Janome and a Necchi. I don’t own a Bernina or Viking. I cannot afford the price point. Jenny was a big stretch for me but I knew I needed a heavy duty machine. My little Brother machine was priced low enough to make me question how good it was going to be. The reviews were helpful and I am happy that I gave this little machine a chance.
So here’s my public service announcement for the day. Today this machine is available on Amazon for a crazy low price in the Gold Box Deal of the Day. (Check out the video on their site.) I don’t have an affiliate link. I don’t make any money from Amazon or Brother telling you about this machine. I am just such a fan! If you do decide to purchase, please think about using Amazon Smile. It doesn’t change the price but Amazon will donate to a charity of your choice. It is an easy way to support an organization while you are filling your shopping cart! (I have chosen the “Wounded Warrier Program” as my charity.)
